The bodies of 66 Bosnian Muslims, murdered and dumped in the Drina
river 20 years ago, have finally been buried in eastern Bosnia.
Several thousand people gathered to mourn the victims of a wave of ethnic cleansing by Bosnian Serb forces during the three year war in the early 1990s.
Their remains were recovered from a nearby lake two years ago.
RIVER OF BLOOD
It is being called the ‘River of Blood’. The 11,541 red chairs symbolise every person killed during the siege of Sarajevo 20 years ago.
The row of chairs stretches 800 metres through the centre of the city. Hundreds of the seats are small to signify the many children that also lost their lives – more than 600.
During a 43-month siege by Serbian forces which began on April 6 1992, innocent civilians were killed in random shelling and by snipers. It marked the start of a three and a half year war, during which 100,000 people died – many of them through ethnic cleansing carried out by the Serbs. More than two million people fled from their homes.
Years of bloodshed were finally ended when NATO bombed the Serbs and the United States brokered a peace deal that split the territory along ethnic lines.
