Spain eye unique treble at Euro 2012

Spain will try to become the first team to win three successive major international titles while Germany will hope to lift their first trophy since 1996 when Euro 2012 kicks off on Friday.

The backdrop of the three-week tournament being staged by Poland and Ukraine across a vast stretch of eastern Europe has already been partly defined by off-field events.

It will be the last Euros with 16 countries, often regarded as the "perfect" formula for a knockout event, because UEFA has agreed to expand the finals to 24 teams in France in 2016, an awkward number that blighted World Cups between 1982 and 1994.

Also no other European Championship is likely to face the infrastructure problems that have dogged this tournament since it was awarded to the co-hosts in April 2007.

Ukraine has continually risked losing its right to stage its half of the event and their hoteliers have been described by the UEFA president Michel Platini as "bandits and crooks".

Lastly, the social and political issues surrounding the first major sporting event to be staged in former communist countries since the 1980 Moscow Olympics, could still endanger the tournament's overall success.

There have already been diplomatic ructions between Ukraine and some western European nations threatening to boycott the event at government level over the jailing of former Ukraine Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko.

On Tuesday, three days before the tournament starts, a crowd of Ukrainians, angry over a parliamentary vote that would increase the role of the Russian language in the country, clashed with police at a fan zone set up in the capital Kiev.

US kills Qaeda number two in drone strike

The United States said Tuesday that al Qaeda number two Abu Yahya al-Libi was dead, after a drone strike dealt the weightiest blow to the terror group since the killing of Osama bin Laden.
The demise of Libi, a charismatic figure beloved by rank-and-file radicals with a flair for media and managerial authority over terror affiliates, meant another victory in President Barack Obama’s ruthless bid to crush al Qaeda.
“Our government has been able to confirm Al-Libi’s death,” said White House spokesman Jay Carney, ending a prolonged US tussle with a man who once escaped from a US jail in Afghanistan, and had defied previous attempts to kill him.
Officials refused to confirm the circumstances of Libi’s death, but Pakistani authorities previously spoke of a pre-dawn CIA drone strike on Monday on a compound in North Waziristan, near the Afghan border.
“It is significant,” another US official said, saying Libi headed al Qaeda operations in Pakistan and outreach to affiliates such as Yemen-based al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), which has attacked US targets.
Officials were unable to say whether there were any other casualties in the attack on Libi, after earlier reports that 15 people had died in the drone strike.
News of the killing of Libi followed reports detailing the scope of the US campaign against global terrorism, including revelations that President Barack Obama personally presides over a “kill list” of top suspects.
Libi’s death will also bolster Obama’s national security credentials as he seeks to repel claims of weakness abroad leveled by his Republican opponent in November’s election, Mitt Romney.
Republicans have complained that the White House is selectively leaking intelligence data to bolster Obama’s reputation as a steely commander in chief.
The Libi killing may again worsen tenuous US ties with nominal anti-terror ally Pakistan, severely harmed by drone strikes, a US raid that killed bin Laden last year and Islamabad’s refusal to reopen Nato supply lines into Afghanistan.
A trusted lieutenant of bin Laden, Libi appeared in countless al Qaeda videos and was considered the chief architect of its global propaganda machine.
The US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Monday that Libi had served as the group’s “general manager” and had overseen day-to-day operations in Pakistani tribal areas.
The official described the killing of Libi as a “major blow” to al Qaeda’s core that would put further pressure on the group’s leader Ayman al-Zawahiri.
Analysts said that Libi had played a talismanic role in al Qaeda, and his loss could be a blow from which the movement may not recover.
“If Zawahiri is put down soon, al Qaeda’s senior leadership will be broken and the torch will have to pass to AQAP,” said terrorism expert Jarret Brachman, of North Dakota State University.
Libi’s death followed the US claim that Atiyah abd al-Rahman, then described in Washington as al Qaeda’s number two, was killed in a US missile strike in North Waziristan on August 22 last year.
“It is a job that is hard to fill and there may not be, given the duration of late that people have held that job … a lot of candidates hoping to fill it,” Carney said.
Pakistani officials had originally said it was unclear whether Libi had been present at a compound in the village of Hesokhel, east of Miranshah, the capital of North Waziristan, that was targeted in the drone strike.
Libi had evaded US clutches before: he escaped from a high security US prison at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan in 2005.
There had been unconfirmed reports that Libi was wounded in a US drone strike that killed nine militants on May 28. A report that he was killed in a December 2009 drone strike in South Waziristan also proved false.

RACE 1
Carlos Checa (Althea Racing Ducati) pulled a controlled win out of the bag at Miller in race one, eventually heading home Marco Melandri (BMW Motorrad Motorsport) by 2.313 seconds. Third was Max Biaggi (Aprilia Racing) who had to work hard in the final laps to hold off Jonathan Rea (Honda World Superbike Team).

Eugene Laverty (Aprilia Racing) finished fifth; with pole man Jakub Smrz (Liberty Racing Team Effenbert Ducati) sixth. Slowing front row starter Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) was finally caught by Chaz Davies (ParkinGO MTC Aprilia) with Davies seventh and Sykes eighth.

RACE 2
Marco Melandri (BMW Motorrad Motorsport) and Jonathan Rea (Honda World Superbike Team) went 1-2 in the second race at Miller, which was halted, shortened to 18 laps, and then re-started almost an hour-and-a-half late. The wait was worth it for the spectators as the last lap fight was tense and exciting right up until Melandri won by only 0.195 seconds.

Max Biaggi (Aprilia Racing) was third and Chaz Davies (ParkinGO MTC Aprilia) fourth, easily the SBK rookie's best result of the year. Early leader Carlos Checa (Althea Racing) was unlucky to fall and no score. The big winner today was Biaggi, who took an 18-point lead away with him, with Melandri and fifth place finisher Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) in joint second place.

Malware W32.Flamer

Symantec’s Security Response team is analysing a new highly sophisticated and discreet threat: W32.Flamer, which it says is on par with the other cyberspace threats like Stuxnet and Duqu.
In a statement, Symantec said the analysis so far revealed that the malware has been built with the ability to obtain information from infected systems primarily located in the Middle East.
As with the previous two threats, this code was not written by a single individual but by an organised well funded group of personnel with directives, it said.
The code includes multiple references to the string ‘FLAME’ which may be indicative of either instances of attacks by various parts of the code, or the malware’s development project name, it said.
The threat has operated discreetly for at least two years with the ability to steal documents, take screenshots of users’ desktops, spread via Universal Serial Bus (USB) drives, disable security vendor products, and under certain conditions spread to other systems, it added.
The threat may also have the ability to leverage multiple known and patched vulnerabilities in Microsoft Windows, in order to spread across a network.
Initial telemetry indicates that the targets of this threat are located primarily in Palestinian West Bank, Hungary, Iran, and Lebanon while other targets include Russia, Austria, Hong Kong, and the United Arab Emirates. The industry sectors or affiliations of individuals targeted are currently unclear, said Symantec.
However, initial evidence shows the victims may not all be targeted for the same reason, it added. Many appear targeted for individual personal activities, rather than their company of employment, it said.
Interestingly, in addition to particular organisations being targeted, many of the attacked systems appear to be personal computers being used from home Internet connections, it said.
The recent Symantec’s Internet Security Threat Report 17 saw the number of targeted attacks increase dramatically during 2011 from an average of 77 per day in 2010 to 82 per day in 2011.--BERNAMA MSL SD

SEBUAH UNGKAPAN

Webber makes it six winners from six races

Red Bull’s Mark Webber held his nerve throughout a nail-biting denouement to the Monaco Grand Prix, forging another little bit of motor racing history as for the first time ever a sixth different driver won the sixth race of the season.

But Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg, Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso and Red Bull team mate Sebastian Vettel were all nose to tail in his wheeltracks, covered by a 1.3s blanket after a desperate chase in which none of them could ever relax.

Webber took the lead at the start and held it from Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton, but the McLaren driver lost third to Alonso during their sole pit stops. Vettel, meanwhile, had started on soft tyres in contrast to the super-softs on which the rest of the top 10 were obliged to start, since he hadn’t set a time in Q3. Thus he ran a much longer first stint and was able to take the lead as Webber, Rosberg, Alonso and Hamilton made their stops.
